The Math Club

Mu Alpha Theta (MAT) is a national organization dedicated to high school mathematics.  The Math Club at Newman is affiliated with this group.  MAT promotes enthusiasm for the study of math by sponsoring contests.  There are typically five to ten contests per year, and they are usually on Saturdays.  Last year, Newman went to Benjamin Franklin, Brother Martin, St. Paul’s, Baton Rouge Magnet, Cabrini, and McGehee to compete in said contests.  The Newman Math Club was supposed to travel to the Episcopal High tournament, but it was cancelled due to bad weather  and flooding.  The club does not practice, but they make a habit of bringing home winning trophies in math subjects.  The next tournament is at Benjamin Franklin on October 29.

Mu Alpha Theta is open for 9th through 12th graders and covers material from Algebra I through Calculus.  If anyone is interested in joining, please speak to Mrs. Cooke in Room 211. You must pay ten dollars, and the money is sent to the national organization in exchange for your membership.  Once you join, your membership is guaranteed for the rest of your high school career.

Joining the Math Club is overall a very fulfilling experience for those who wish to challenge themselves in the field of mathematics.
