Newman Soccer is in Full Swing

Newman boys’ varsity soccer is in full swing, and as they are entering the home stretch, the next few games are the most important of the season. Last Wednesday, the soccer team faced off against one of their biggest rivals, Jesuit. Midway through the second half, Arthur Leman scored off a PK, giving the Greenies a 1-0 lead. Following the PK, they changed up their positioning to 4 men in the backfield, in an attempt to slow down Jesuit’s offense. However, just minutes later, Jesuit was awarded a PK and scored. Newman’s chances of winning were shrinking as the time was running out. Minutes later, the result was as predicted: a very competitive match with a low scoring affair. A 1-1 draw was not what the Newman Men’s team was playing for, but they had to move on from that game and start focusing on the next one.
The next district game was just a day later, as Newman had to battle Haynes for the top spot in the division. With a history of competitive games, the Newman boys knew this game has a lot at stake. Not only would 1st place in the division guarantee a spot in the playoffs, but it also reassures the team that they are the best team in our district for the 2016-2017 soccer season.
The Newman Greenies were able to close out the game against Haynes easily, in a 4-0 fashion, limiting the Haynes team to only a few shot attempts. In a competitive match, Evan deBlanc was able to score three of the 4 goals, while the defense of Sawyer Roussel, Will Reynoir, Douglas Le Clercq, and Emmet Morrison was able shut down Hayne’s fast attackers.
The Newman boys’ team finishes up their season against Brother Martin this Tuesday. Brother Martin is currently 2nd in state with a 15-3-2 record. Will the 13-2-2 Greenies be able to stop Brother Martin’s 5 win streak or head into the playoffs with the bitter taste of defeat in their mouths?
