Cooking Chronicles: A Failed Chickpea Cookie Dough

Chickpea Cookie Dough

Chickpea Cookie Dough

Healthy food, and especially healthy desserts are weird. We all know that. Some “healthy” desserts are decent, while others are akin to the monstrosity I made last week.

On Wednesday afternoon, I found myself compelled to make chickpea “cookie dough.” This delusional idea was inspired by a slew of Instagram posts that made it seem like real cookie dough, even making it look appetizing.

Naturally, I was intrigued. Also naturally (and consistent with most my “healthy” endeavors), it was an epic failure. I felt abject disappointment the second the “dough” touched my tongue though from step one I knew I was setting myself up for failure.

Making the “dough” (I use the word dough loosely given that its essentially chocolate chip hummus) was incredibly time consuming. I spent twenty minutes just husking chickpeas and then blending them with oat flour, peanut butter, and maple syrup. I already realized that my mixture did not look right; it definitely wasn’t as pretty as the blogs made it look.

The real failure came with the mini chocolate chips, which should have been the redeeming element. I had not accounted for the factor that my blender was heating up. When I dumped the chocolate chips into the mixture, they melted almost instantly. Not to be dramatic, but this was the end of the end. My knockoff hummus was uglier than St. Charles after Tucks.

Despite the appearance, it tasted fine. Not good, just fine. It was essentially chocolate peanut butter hummus, so it was as appealing as it sounds.

Would I recommend this recipe? No. Would I make it again? No. Although, someone somewhere must continually make this chocolate chip franken-hummus, given its popularity.

Not all healthy desserts are bad, but sadly, this chickpea cookie dough was one cookie cake sized failure.
