Review: The Weeknd at Voodoo Fest 2016
This weekend, the masses gathered at City Park for three days full of music, food, and fun. I attended Voodoo Fest Friday and Saturday night, and I had the privilege of witnessing some fantastic acts. Some headliners included: Tool, Arcade Fire, Cage the Elephant, and The Weeknd. My definite favorite and clear winner amongst the younger crowd was The Weeknd, a Canadian based 26-year-old R&B artist.
The Weeknd became an overnight sensation last year with their song “I Can’t Feel My Face,” which was released June 8th, 2015. The song is off their second album, Beauty Behind the Madness. Also on the album were other hits like, “The Hills” and “Often.” The Weeknd’s most recent single, “Starboy,” is currently at number 2 on Billboard’s Hot 100 charts.
A very anticipated show at Voodoo Fest, The Weeknd performed these songs and many more. The songs were accompanied by a display of lights provided by a triangular display loaded with fireworks and colored lights timed to go off in time with the music, emphasizing the beat drops and note changes throughout the show.
Each song had the same reaction: scream, dance, repeat. There was no extraordinary song that varied the constant vibe of The Weeknd’s voice and dulled beats, and in that the show was somewhat monotonous. However, the crowd seemed to eat up the rhythms and beats as they danced until the final song, the new hit “Starboy.” The Weeknd thanked the city and the crowd and finished out the first night with a bang.
