Zumba Club
This year a new and very popular club is the Zumba club. This club meets every Friday at the second half of lunch. Their primary goals are to dance, have fun, and get energy out before heading to class. They meet on the senior patio and play fun upbeat music, while their club founder, Julia Nelson leads them in the exercise. Zumba by definition is an aerobic fitness program featuring movements inspired by various styles of Latin American dance. Julia discovered Zumba during a semester abroad and decided to bring it to the Newman community. Zumba is the perfect combination of dancing and exercise to feel rejuvenated and gain some endorphins before class. Julia said, “I want everyone, no matter what grade, to join in together. I want this club to be a place where anyone, not only students, can relax and have fun. A whole week of school can be stressful and tiring, so having the Zumba club can cure that stress for 20 minutes.” She loves how the club serves as a way to connect all the grades through movement. Her spirit carries on to the club, keeping everyone upbeat and moving. She started the club because she “wanted to connect all grades. Doesn’t matter what grade, everyone gets up and busts a move. I love how everyone gets so into it and begins to ‘dance like nobody is watching.’ Yet, it can seem intimidating being on the senior patio and dancing in front of us. I’m glad that freshmen feel comfortable being on the senior patio because this brings the divisions of grades together. ” Please come check out the Zumba club this Friday!
