I wouldn’t call myself a Harry Potter fanatic but definitely a fan; I have seen all the movies multiple times, and when they are on cable, I will watch them. So, when the new Fantastic Beasts movie came out, I wanted to see it.

Unfortunately, I was disappointed by this movie. (SPOILERS AHEAD)

To summarize it, a wizard named Grindelwald wants to rid the magic world of “mud-bloods” (half-human/half-wizard) and rule over the magic world of only pure bloods. A young Albus Dumbledore asks for the help of his former student Newt Scamander to stop him. Other subplots include Newt and Leta’s connection, Queenie and Jacob’s failing relationship, and other forgettable characters.

To be fair, I have not seen the first Fantastic Beasts movie. However, I do not think that this would have completely impacted my opinion of this movie. I also fell asleep three separate times, but I think that speaks more to the quality of the movie than to my inability to stay awake. I saw this movie about two weeks ago, and I had to look up all of the plot points and names of characters because it was so utterly forgettable.

Everything was just fine. The acting was fine, the action was fine, the plot was fine.

I ultimately think this movie is Hollywood taking advantage of people’s love for the Harry Potter franchise and spitting out a movie that clearly no one was passionate about.
