✨Magic Milk✨
In order to conduct this experiment, you will need a shallow bowl, whole milk, food coloring, and dish soap. First, pour the whole milk into a shallow bowl. Then, add about 3 to 4 drops of food coloring of each color you want to use. Add dish soap to the center of the milk. Watch to see what happens next!
Isn’t it magical? 🙂
But magic is just science unexplained. If you wish to continue to believe that this is magic don’t read ahead. If you’re a person of science, the explanation is quite interesting. Milk is a liquid made of fats, water, and minerals. Therefore, there is surface tension present in the liquid. Its molecules produce both positive and negative charges to keep the milk in a steady state. The addition of dish soap provides a surfactant in the experiment. A surfactant is a substance that can affect another substance’s surface tension using hydrophilic and hydrophobic parts. Hydrophilic are water loving parts and hydrophobic are non-water attracted regions. The dish soap’s hydrophilic parts attach to the water molecules in milk, and the hydrophobic parts attach to the fat. Normally we cannot see this process, but with the help of food coloring we are able to see this in real time.
