On September 11, 2024, New Orleans was hit by Hurricane Francine, a category 2 storm with 100 mph winds. The structure of the storm broke down and slowed, resulting in significant flooding for the city. According to the National Weather Service, 8.25 inches of rain fell in New Orleans and 8.08 inches fell in Jefferson Parish. This rain overwhelmed the pumps causing flooding all over the city.
Along with the flooding, there were lots of power outages. 250,000 Louisiana residents lost power, and as of Friday, September 13th, 10,000 Entergy customers remained without power. Entergy is working to restore power as quickly as possible, according to their spokesmen.
Even with all of the power outages and flooding issues, the kids got something out of it. All the schools in the area cancelled classes on Wednesday and Thursday, and some even Friday.
“My favorite part of the hurricane was sitting at home and missing school,” according to Newman Freshman Eloise Goodenough.
