Hecker Invitational: Behind the Scenes of a Track Meet

Last Friday, April 13th, the Newman Track and Field team hosted the 33rdannual Hecker Invitational. This was not any ordinary meet for the team because it was completely run by Newman coaches, teachers, athletes, and of course parents. This was no small task and was made more difficult because a number of athletes were competing and were therefore unable to assist with running meet activities. Many people don’t quite know how much goes on in order to make a meet successful and, most importantly, run on time. Parents began making preparations for the meet many weeks ago while head coach Mark Faliveno sent all appropriate materials to participating schools. The parents arrived at Tad Gormley Stadium in the early afternoon on Friday to begin setting up and putting out all of the food in the hospitality room. Many students arrived early in order to begin assisting with events. Juniors Jack Finger and Laine Nowak helped coach Randy Zell over at high jump. This involved resetting the bar each time the jumper failed to cross it and raising the bar to new heights when all athletes either surpassed the mark or failed to reach the previous height. Despite racing later in the day, senior Lady Reynolds took pictures of various events for the yearbook. Junior Robert Freeman also lent a hand by raking the sand pit after each long jumper and triple jumper had their turn. Additionally, numerous teachers also helped make sure the meet ran on time. Mr. Malis and Mrs. Nicholson measured and marked each throw of the discus. With all of these moving parts happening at once, it’s difficult to keep a meet running on time and any track and field athlete can attest to how frustrating it is to be at a meet which seems never ending. However, with a great deal of help from all of these groups, the meet was very successful and everyone enjoyed themselves, especially the seniors who were honored at the beginning of the running events for senior night
