Speech and Debate Early March Update
The Speech and Debate team is entering its most wonderful time of the year aka championship season. The month of March is notoriously busy for the team and this year is no exception. This year some members of the team find themselves competing for five consecutive weekends at the City, District, and State tournaments.
The first weekend of competition the team took first at the District Congress tournament which also serves as the national qualifier for Congressional debate. Senior Serena Klebba took first in the Senate for the second year in a row, and rookie Isabelle Plaisance took fifth. In the House, sophomore Elizabeth Eliot came fourth, junior Elly Patron came fifth, junior Giovanna Piedimonte came sixth and junior Ellie Carey came seventh. Carolina Fontanez and Noa Nassof both advanced into the final session as well.
The tournament served as the qualifying tournament to the NSDA national tournament that will be hosted online this year. Both Serena Klebba and Elizabeth Elliot qualified to Nationals and Elly Patron is the first alternate in the house. The team’s strong showing was sweetened as it was the third consecutive year Newman has won District congress.
The next weekend your Greenies competed in the New Orleans City Championship with doubles as the qualifying tournament to the Catholic Forensic League’s national tournament.
The team hopes to carry this level of competitive success with them to the rest of their tournaments this month. If you see any debaters in the hall make sure to wish them congratulations and good luck as they wrap up their season!
