Track and Field Qualifiers Through the Roof
After an extremely eventful few races in the District and Regional meets, the Newman Track and Field team is headed to State! The Newman Track and Field team hosted both of the meets at Tad Gormley Stadium, run completely by Newman coaches, teachers, athletes, and parents. Although the meets were not huge, organizing a victorious tournament was quite the feat. Newman successfully kept the events running on time and even ahead of schedule. The highlight of Newman hosting the tournaments is the gleeful feeling of exhilaration when the team wins the Regional Championship!
There were many student achievements at the two meets, especially the Regionals, including eleven personal records, five seasonal bests, and a new school record by the 4×200 relay team of Miya Castro, Mae Mae Landry, Morgan Lebourgeois, and Claire Charpentier. Additionally, there were multiple regional MVPS, including Parker Davis, Claire Charpentier, and the sibling duo: Ella and Charlie Aucoin, who both won 1st place in their events. Ella won the triple jump and high jump, while Charlie won the shot put and discus. The Newman track and field team was extremely successful in having a huge number of qualifying student-athletes so they can compete in State. The most memorable moments were when Maggie Smith and Sam Haber put forward their best efforts to beat out the competition at the last minute. In the 3200, Sam ran alongside a rival athlete from Country Day, and in the last 100-meter stretch of the race, full out sprinted toward the finish line, narrowly beating his opponent. Maggie ran the shorter 800-meter event and won first place, which qualifies her for that event in State. Overall, both the boys and girls teams scored enough points to win the Regional Championships! Good luck to them at State!
