The Varsity swim team traveled to Baton Rouge, Louisiana to compete at an Open High-School swim meet at Crawfish Aquatics. This meet was a good chance for the Varsity team to compare their performance to swimmers from larger schools, such as Jesuit, St. Joseph’s Academy, and Catholic, to name a few. Overall, the meet was a success, and all the swimmers enjoyed the new experience.
Our very own Coach Scott woke up at 4:00 in the morning to make sure he would be ready for the day’s meet. The swimmers arrived at Newman around 6:15 in the morning, and many swimmers took the hour-long bus ride as an opportunity to take a nap. Halfway through the ride, we enjoyed toasted bagel halves and cream cheese for lunch (which was a nice surprise, because many swimmers did not have time to eat beforehand). Before de-boarding the bus, the swimmers took a look at the heat sheets and wrote down their event, heat, and lane assignments for each of their events. All swimmers swim at least two events and some swim up to four.
“This was the first meet that we’ve ever done at Baton Rouge, it was a great opportunity for the team to try their hardest and I am very proud of everyone and how they did.” – Vivian Zhou ‘26 (Co-Captain)
Being a Division III school competing against Division I schools, we did not necessarily hold up against our competition. However, we were successful in our own right. Many swimmers achieved State Qualifying times and personal bests.
State Qualifiers:
Morgan Breaux
Charlotte Norwood
Nick Rezza (Co-Captain)
Vivian Zhou (Co-Captain)
Personal Bests:
Morgan Breaux – 100 Freestyle
Morgan Breaux – 200 Individual Medley
Charlotte Norwood – 100 Backstroke
Vivian Zhou – 100 Fly (Co-Captain)
Vivian Zhou – 100 Breaststroke (Co-Captain)
The meet lasted from 8:00 to 12:30. After the meet, the swim team re-boarded the buses and enjoyed pre-ordered sandwiches and salads from Panera (thanks Nick Rezza!) for lunch, which was good for refueling after such a long and exhausting meet. The team returned to Newman around 1:30, which allowed everyone to rest throughout the afternoon.
