Ms. Catherine Calhoun teaches 7th Grade Pre-Algebra, 8th Grade Algebra 1, and 9th Grade Algebra 2. She grew up in Vicksburg, Mississippi and before she came to Newman, she taught in Georgia at Atlanta International School. Her favorite book she’s ever read is To Kill A Mocking Bird by Harper Lee. She’s extremely passionate about advocating for rescue dogs. Something on her bucket list is to open her own animal shelter. After a long day, she likes to do yoga and read.
Her favorite thing about Newman is how friendly the people are, both the students and teachers. “Newman differs from my other schools because I used to teach in international schools and our student body was very diverse and it wasn’t an American curriculum. It was a different style of education.” In her personal life, she’s motivated by staying healthy, and in her professional life, she is motivated by her coworkers. When asked about her proudest accomplishment, she says: “I am very proud of the fact that I have moved countries [to teach] serval times and have become much more open-minded in my worldviews.” In her personal life, her mentor has always been her parents, and in high school, it was her math teacher: “Through my parents, I watched them become involved in the community which I think is very important for everyone to become involved in their local, national, or global community. And my high school math teacher believed that I could be successful in math even when I was struggling.”
Let’s give a warm welcome to Ms. Calhoun!
