Girls’ Basketball: A Season Review

Girls+Basketball%3A+A+Season+Review

Throughout this year, the girls’ basketball team has worked hard to compete at the Varsity level. After resurrecting the girls’ basketball program in the 2014-15 season, the team has made a lot of progress. They completed a difficult lifting schedule, participated in intense practices, and bonded over team lunches and dinners. This year marked the first time the team qualified for the Varsity designation, meaning they competed on a much more challenging level but were eligible for a playoff berth. They managed to tie McGehee for 2nd in their district and qualify for the playoffs.

In the first round of the playoffs, Pope John Paul’s team forfeited, rocketing the Newman girls into the second round of the tournament. On February 19th, the girls’ basketball team made their first playoff appearance since 2006 with their game against Northlake Christian, the top seed in the league. Newman lost this game after a valiant effort, ending the team’s season. This year, the team was led by Senior Captain Katherine Vogt, Junior Captain Audrey Singer, and Junior Captain Shoshana Cohen. The team was coached by Head Coach Tracy Blackerby and Assistant Coach David Perez. The entire roster is included below:
