Varsity Tennis Crushes the 2023 Season!
The tennis season 2023 began with a bang! This year the girl’s team consisted of five seniors, one junior, two sophomores, two freshmen, and two seventh-graders, with captains Virginia Cunningham and Libby Payne. The boy’s team had four seniors, three juniors, one sophomore, and four freshmen with captain Mitchell Nelson. Both teams were coached again by head coach Hossam Meligy, with assistance by Brian Yellin and Will Joyner. Both the girl’s and boy’s teams continued to perform very well throughout the entire season, with wins against important opponents! At the annual regional tournament, the girl’s line one doubles team consisting of Virginia Cunningham and Gwendolyn Gray placed first beating Academy of Sacred Heart in the finals, with the team placing second in the overall tournament. On the boy’s side, the line one doubles team of Mitchell Nelson and Archer Vandenburgh placed first, the line one singles player Carter Fayard also came in first, and the boys team placed first overall. With these wins, all singles and doubles teams on both the girls and boys side advanced to the state tournament in Monroe! At the annual state tournament (Division III), the girl’s team won overall in the entire state! The girl’s doubles team of Virginia Cunningham and Gwendolyn Gray placed first, beating Academy of Sacred Heart again in the finals! Additionally, the boy’s team came second in the state! Singles player Carter Fayard won in the finals and placed first in the tournament! A huge congratulations to the tennis team and all their hard work this year!
