The Newman football team played East Jefferson last week for their annual Homecoming game and showed strength and depth on both sides of the ball, defeating the Warriors 38-14. On offense, Arch Manning accounted for four passing touchdowns to wide receivers Pike Philibert, Jarmone Sutherland, and Beau Adams.

Newman had 384 total yards, complemented by a strong rushing attack led by Joseph Pleasant (153 yards), and continued their domination of opponents through the air. With Manning having nine touchdowns in the last two games, the freshman quarterback seems to be fitting into this high caliber offense just fine, putting up 38 points on Friday. Brandon Williams and Joshua Koeppel dominated the defensive line, combining for 3.5 sacks and eight tackles for a loss.

While they allowed East Jefferson a last-second touchdown, the Newman defense held their opponent to 14 points and averaging 12 points allowed per game through three weeks of the 2019 season. Heading into their most challenging contest this year, the Newman Greenies will face rival Country Day at Yulman Stadium this Friday. This extremely explosive offense led by Arch Manning, and the strong defense held down by University of Virginia-commit Brandon Williams, will need to perform at their highest level to defeat the Cajuns and revenge their 2018 loss.

While the Country Day Cajuns defeated East Jefferson by only eight points earlier this year, the Greenies ability to dominate both sides of the ball against the Warriors last Friday show why they are the favorites heading into this rivalry game.
